Press Release Summary = Austin, Texas psychedelic rockers, the Golden Dawn, have released a new studio album titled- Texas Medicine. This is their follow-up effort to 1968's Power Plant on the legendary Houston, psychedelic rock, Label- International Artists.
Press Release Body = Texas Rock Legends, the Golden Dawn, have reformed and have issued a new album- Texas Medicine. This is their follow up effort to their 1968 debut, Power Plant, on the famous Houston, psychedelic rock, label- International Artists. The album features a virtual "who's - who" of well-known Texas rockers as guests. It takes its name from a proposed LP title by former 13th Floor Elevators guitarist- Stacy Sutherland.
The album is a worthy follow-up to Power Plant. Singer / Songwriter, George Kinney, is a powerful vocalist who has been compared in style to his childhood friend- Roky Erickson. Rather than weakening over the decades since Power Plant, Kinney's voice has aged like a fine wine, exposing new nuances.
Kiloh R. Smith, of the Texas Psych Google Group, recently sat with George Kinney to talk about Texas Medicine and other things:
Kiloh- What was the impetus to get back together with the Golden Dawn?
George Kinney- Eric Arn was putting together the Texas Psych Fest and called me outta the blue and asked it I though I could put the band back together for a gig. I made a few calls and the band was reformed overnight.
Kiloh- Why did it take so long between albums?
George Kinney- Real life got in the way. And mainly that translates into no money to work with. We had always been stifled by the poor handling that IA dealt us, so everyone just got into different things. You know, kids, horses and dogs with fleas.
Kiloh- What\'s different now from 1967?
George Kinney- Well, age, obviously. And the whole world is different. Music is a commodity now, you know with IPod and all that. It used to be special to be in a band. We used to hold our breaths waiting for a new album by our favorite band. Now bands put out several a year and stink up the place with dribble. Everything has to fit the winning criteria for successful marketing. It all sounds the same. It is predictable and that pleases the mass marketers. You have to be able to predict the market for successful mass production. There is so much money involved that few things are left to chance. I\'ve heard that it is risky to deal with me.
Kiloh- The legendary Jerry Lightfoot was a frequent contributor of your's. He recently passed away. Any thoughts?
George Kinney- Jerry was the real thing. He was the most dedicated musician I ever knew. He knew more about music than anyone else, too. He knew where all the bodies were buried. He helped me with my music ever since I met him. He was one of the truly great songwriters and had a heart of gold. Unfortunately, he was self-destructive and it finally caught up with him, like it did with Townes and Janis and Jimi Hendrix. I could go on and on about Jerry. The simple truth is I loved him and miss him greatly.
Kiloh- Please list the members of the Golden Dawn that contributed.
George Kinney- Texas Medicine includes Jimmy Bird and Bill Hallmark from the original band.
Kiloh- This album is has a whole list of Texas All-Star musicians who contributed. Can you tell us something about that?
George Kinney- I have always been lucky like that. Even though I never have had much fame or fortune as a result of my songs, other musicians have always been able to tell the difference between my songs and all the rest. My last album included great cuts with Toni Price, Champ Hood, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Mike Buck, Pete Gordon, Gurf Morlix and Jerry Lightfoot.
On this new CD, Toni Price, Mary Welch, Mary Hattersly, Charlie Prichard, Dude Edwards, Frank Rodeniur, Terry Brown and Julie Carpenter join in to help. They make the CD sound really good. I think it is one of the best CDs out there.
